What Dads Want
It's the same question two or three times a year: what to get for Dad. It seems as if each year it gets more and more difficult to come up with a unigue and thoughtful gift for Dad. Whether it's Christmas, birthdays or Father's Day, coming up with new ideas is downright tough. If Dad's closet, tool chest or sports bag is busting at the seams, it's time to come up with different ideas for dad gifts.

The best place to start is to ask yourself, "what does Dad want?" This is not as easy a question as it seems. Most Dad's fit the "man who has everything" category, or if he doesn't, he fits the "doesn't need anything" category. Fortunately for his loved ones, this isn't actually the case. Dad always needs something. Sometimes even he doesn't know what he wants or needs. Think for a bit about what dad enjoys doing. Maybe he loves golf or football. Perhaps he's a fisherman or a hunter. A new golf club or a fishing pole is probably not something you feel comfortable picking out. The choices on the market are simply too great and often the prices for the best items are rather high. Think of a gift that will help dad to enjoy his favorite pasttime better.
Fathers nowadays are thinking and feeling younger than fathers have in the past. Some of the most popular gifts for Dad are the same as gifts for guys in their teens or early twenties. Maybe your Dad would like a new iPod or a handheld game console like Nintendo DS. If he already has either of these, you could get him some new games or a gift card for iTunes. Camcorders are always popular items for men. If your father is an "early adopter", if he always seems to get the new tech gear first, do some research into some of the new gadgets. ThinkGeek.com has some great items for the tech nerd Dads out there. They have office toys like sculpture magnets of unbelievable magnetic strength and digital binary clocks will tell time in 1s and 0s.
For the sports fan Dads there are always cool gift ideas out there. One of the latest sports collectible crazes is collecting stadium miniatures. Get a scale replica of his favorite stadium! These make great conversation pieces and elicit lots of sports stories. You can get Dad a miniature Wrigley Field or Soldier Field or any number of stadiums available. Another cool gift for the sports fan is to purchase them a signed collectible card. Get Dad a signed and framed Dan Marino or Cal Ripkin card. Instead of a card, Dad might like a signed jersey from his favorite team or player, or even a ball signed by his favorite team or player. Whether it's a baseball, basketball or football, your dad is sure to display it proudly. He'll certainly be prouder of a signed Dolphins helmet than that Billy the Singing Bass you got him last year.
If Dad likes to play sports instead of just watching, there are always tons of choices for gifts. One of the neatest ideas out there for the avid golfer is a digital golf scorecard. This will keep track of his game on up to four different courses. The scorecard measures his performance hole by hole against his past performance and against his fellow players: a fun and creative gift idea for dad.
Another creative gift for dads who have everything is a framed share in a company. Whether it's a company he admires or a product he's nuts over, you can buy a single share of stock in that company. They can be purchased framed for instant wall appeal. If Dad's into Tootsie Rolls, you can buy him a single stock share in Tootsie Roll Industries or if he's a computer nerd, a stock share in Intel Corporation for around $28 is perfect.
Some dads deal with stress by taking their frustrations out on inanimate objects. If your dad is one of those, consider an Executive Punching Bag. Put it in his office, his den at home, or next to his easy chair to work off that anger and frustration. This punching bag looks like the old speed bags that boxers use. Instead of hanging from the ceiling on large rings, the Executive Punching Bag latches to any tabletop with powerful suction cups. Whether it's the boss making Dad crazy or your cell phone bills, the Executive Punching Bag will make sure he directs his frustration in a safer direction!
Some planning beforehand can go a long way to coming up with a great gift for Dad. Do some research on Dad’s favorite things to do. Ask Mom what she thinks he might like. If she isn’t sure, maybe you could appraoch his friends or a co-worker. Sometimes the thing Dad enjoys the most is not readily obvious to family members.
